May we bring one home for you?

Online Foster Family Application

This application is for volunteers who wish to become part of our foster network. If you desire to become a greyhound owner, please complete the applicable application location in the menu to the left.

Please ensure that the application is filled out completely before submitting. Once your application is submitted, we will begin immediately working on assigning a foster dog that will be a comfortable match for your existing family. An incomplete application may cause a delay in processing.

In the event a VAGA representative does not contact you within three business days, please notify us at staff@virginiagreyhounds.org. From time to time an application may not reach us and we won't know it's missing unless you're in touch with us. Thank you.

Fostering Responsibilities

I/We agree to the following requirements as a foster home for VAGA:

  • To keep the foster dog safe.
  • To keep the foster dog on a leash or in a safe fenced enclosure at all times when outdoors.
  • To provide training for house-breaking, walking on leash, using the stairs, and socialization.
  • Will take the foster dog to the VAGA monthly Meet and Greet event most convenient to your home.
  • Protect the foster dog from bloat by not running him two hours before and two hours after eating. Never feed an overheated dog.
  • Prohibit a newly spayed or neutered greyhound from running. Leash-walk the recovering greyhound for 7 days or accompany it outside to ensure it does not run. Females require 30 days for a complete recovery and males need two weeks.
  • The foster greyhound must be kept off all household furniture and will sleep exclusively on a dog bed or in a crate.
  • Keep notes and turn them over to the adoptive family to help them transition the foster dog in to their home.
  • Any signs of illness or behavioral issues will be reported to VAGA immediately.

While great care is given to determine the physical condition and temperament of each greyhound that comes into VAGA's adoption/foster program, no guarantee is made as to the physical condition or temperament of the retired racer placed in your care.

The foster care provider releases and holds harmless the former owners, VAGA, it's representatives, and volunteers from any liability associated with the foster greyhound including, but not limited to, any claims for property damage or personal injury caused by your foster greyhound.
